Gana Unnayan
Kendra (GUK) was established as a non government voluntary
organization in 1985 and since then implementing integrated
development programs for the poor disadvantage people of Gaibandha
district. Recently we have extended our working areas from Gaibandha
to four northern districts such as Rangpur, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat
and Nilphamari. We are
working mainly on enhancement capacity of men and women, poverty
eradication, livelihoods development, empowerment of women, gender
equality, human rights, reducing disaster risk and finally building
an exploitation and disparity free society. Most of the northern
districts including Gaibandha are very much prone of disaster and
poverty. Three big
rivers like the Bramhaputra, Jamuna and Teesta are flowing over
these districts. The
people of this districts have to survive by struggling against
yearlong river erosion, flood, cold wave, drought, tornado,
monga (seasonal food crisis) and so on.
GUK has been working standing by the side of the affected
people by disasters at the time of their severe crisis since its
inception.
